The Truth about Goal Setting

I’ve been actively engaged with goal setting practise for the past 10 years now.

The process of it fascinates me, being a bit of nerd for all things self-development. I love reading about how people in all different fields and walks of life discover their path and tap into their potential.

I was first introduced to the art of goal setting through sports-lux giant lululemon athletica as a fresh-faced University student. They were much smaller and grass-roots at this time, and I was lucky enough to spend a number of years with the company, progressing through different roles as my customer service and leadership skills developed.

One of the best aspects about lululemon’s work environment is its rich goal setting culture, which encourages customers and staff alike to consider their ultimate vision for the future, or “what a perfect day in your life would look like”, ten years from now. The process always begins with this kind of large scale exploration – what would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? – to determine the most important aspirations within Health, Career and Personal spheres. From here we were usually encouraged to work backwards, breaking our huge goals down into smaller steps and key milestones, i.e. 5 and 3 years from now. By the time you reach weekly or daily territory, the huge goal is whittled into a bite-sized task which you can feasibly track and put into action. It’s quite a clever system, and I learnt a lot from the process.

The method also references the S.M.A.R.T acronym (which I think was originally coined by George Doran in the 80s), ensuring that each goal is filtered through a strategic and effective checklist.
